Macedonian, a late 16th Century pair of Royal Doors.

A pair of Macedonian Royal Doors in carved, pierced and gilt wood, each with two sunken panels painted with saints and set amongst luxuriantly scrolling Aganthus, the arch tops with dragons and foliate motifs, the borders formed as laurel wreaths. This type of carved woodwork, which replaced the carved stonework to be found in Byzantine churches of the XII-XIV Centuries, was located especially in Macedonia and in the Territory of the present-day Serbia. Sold with the letter from Wartski dated 15th August 1963 "these are absolutely unique" doors.
