A pencil portrait of King Alexander 1 of Yugoslavia. (King Alexander 1 of Yugoslavia (1888-1934), the son of King Peter 1 of Serbia was the first King of Yugoslavia. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, the Regent Alexander accepted authority over the newly created Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. He inherited the throne in 1921 and in 1929 Alexander responded dramatically to the political chaos brought about by the assassination of a Croatian politician by abolishing the constitution and national political parties, creating a dictatorship and naming the country the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He was assassinated in 1934 in Marseilles by a Bulgarian revolutionary.
